John Melvin established a reputation in the design of social housing, and has won many awards for inner city developments in sensitive areas. This skill was coupled with an understanding of history, and the importance of place. Attention to detail, and the urban context has been paramount.

Along with the firm's skills in social housing, has been a interest in buildings for schools and universities. At the same time, private housing has always been warmly welcomed.

Half of the work of the office, has been concerned with listed buildings, and buildings within conservation areas. Because of John Melvin's knowledge of historic buildings and their details, for over ten years he sat on the Bishop of London's Diocesan Advisory Committee for Care of Churches, and is currently Chairman of the Fabric Advisory Committee for Guildford Cathedral.
